A Values-Driven Examination of an Independent School Educator’s Goals Goes Beyond a Balance Sheet

A Values-Driven Examination of an Independent School Educator’s Goals Goes Beyond a Balance Sheet

April 24, 2026

Like many of the families they serve, private school educators naturally connect their money with their values. They understand that a deeply felt sense of purpose is essential not only for their work, but also for their financial lives. When educators pause to examine their goals through a values-driven lens, the process can transform far more than a financial plan. It can reshape, and reaffirm, their entire approach to living with intention.

It’s common for educators to wonder, “Why am I doing this work for so little, when I could earn so much more elsewhere?”

A thoughtful planning process can help answer that question with clarity and confidence. To support these conversations, a financial planner may use a framework centered on three key elements:

  1. Values: Activities and questions that uncover what matters most
  2. Purpose: Crafting your Statement of Financial Purpose
  3. Action: Taking meaningful steps aligned with your values

Clarifying What Truly Matters

Identifying values often begins with reflective questions such as:

  • What does a perfect day look like?
  • How do I define success, security, and a life well lived?

These questions reveal themes that frequently guide educators developing young people, building a legacy, prioritizing simplicity, or protecting time for family.

Values typically fall into two categories:

  • Realized values: those already present in your life (teaching, coaching, mentoring, community building).
  • Aspirational values: qualities you want to embody more fully as you lead and support students.

A financial planner who understands the educator experience will take a holistic approach to both health and wealth. They can help deepen this exploration by asking thoughtful follow-up questions that bring clarity and meaning to the surface.

This work moves you beyond your personal balance sheet and toward the ongoing alignment of your money and your meaning, supported by tools such as your Statement of Financial Purpose.

Crafting Your Statement of Financial Purpose

Once your values are clear, the next step is articulating your Statement of Financial Purpose (SoFP),a concise expression of the “why” behind your financial decisions. Think of it as your personal mission statement, much like the one guiding your school, but focused on you as an individual educator and leader.

In a world full of distractions and shiny objects, your SoFP becomes your north star. It grounds your choices, reminds you of what is truly valuable, and connects your financial life to your calling in education.

Your SoFP answers questions such as:

  • Why am I an educator?
  • Why is this work so important to me?
  • How will my financial means support my walk of life all the way through end of plan?

It serves as an anchor in times of uncertainty, a catalyst for positive change, and a guide for future financial decisions. It also helps your financial planner make more effective recommendations by ensuring your plan reflects your authentic priorities, not generic goals or what you think you “should” want.

Using Your Statement to Set and Refine Goals

Your SoFP becomes a practical tool for establishing new goals, both short-term and long-term. As your life evolves, you and your advisor can revisit the statement as needed to ensure it still reflects your reality and aspirations. This ongoing, periodic dialogue helps you stay aligned with what matters most.

When an advisor understands your values and purpose, they can unlock deeper, more meaningful planning conversations. This leads to more fulfilling discussions and ultimately helps you do more with the wealth you’ve built. Aligning financial decisions with a clear sense of purpose fosters a more intentional and satisfying relationship with money, no matter the size of your net worth.

Taking Action

Once your Statement of Financial Purpose is in place, the focus shifts to action and accountability. Your advisor can help you use the statement as a filter for evaluating both existing and future goals. You can then reflect on whether your current plan moves you closer to living your values, or whether adjustments are needed to support your life in service to private school education.

A Final Thought

As a financial planner, financial advisor, and trusted guide, my work is thematic. My greatest hope is that you feel empowered to use money as a tool for living the best possible version of your life, however you envision that to be, without being distracted by the shiny objects.

Financial advisors often describe their value in terms of investment performance, tax efficiency, or comprehensive planning. Yet when seasoned private school educators reflect on what truly matters, they often point to moments that go far beyond asset allocation or retirement projections. The real value of advice emerges when advisors help clients navigate identity shifts, life transitions, and deeply personal money narratives.  Work that touches meaning, purpose, and even self-transcendence.

Most people don’t seek out a financial planner to “find purpose.” But perhaps educators, who already live with purpose every day, should consider seeking out a financial planner to ensure their means can fully support that purpose.
